Harry ‘Bungles’ Daley denies being chronic ganja smoker
Monday, 31 August 2009
Former head of the St. Catherine North Police Division Superintendent Harry "Bungles" Daley took the witness stand Monday morning to defend himself against corruption allegations.
Superintendent Daley is accused soliciting protection money from St. Catherine businessman Tafari Clarke.
The Superintendent and his attorney spent the early part of his testimony trying to punch holes into statements given by a witness that the senior policeman was a chronic ganja smoker.
Linton Clarke, said to be a life-long friend of Mr. Daley, had told the court that he used to prepare ganja spliffs for the senior cop at his house in Sydenham, St. Catherine.
However, Superintendent Daley strongly denied these allegations and accused Mr. Clarke of lying to the court.
In declaring that he does not use ganja, Superintendent Daley added that as a senior police officer he would have lost the respect of his neighbours.
Mr. Daley further testified that Linton Clarke, who is the father of the main witness Tafari Clarke, relied heavily on him for financial support over the years.
He said he had no idea why the elder Clarke would have made such a serious claim.
The trial continues on Tuesday.
The former divisional head was charged after being captured on video and audio tapes allegedly accepting money from the younger Mr. Clarke in an extortion racket.
Prosecutors claim he was involved in a racket in which he collected protection money from Mr. Clarke between 2007 and July last year when he was arrested.
